More About the Characters

What are they all about?

In a previous post I talked about the teenagers in my sciencekids-silhouettes_thumb2 fiction worlds. In this post, I’d like to focus on my fantasy characters. They are a little younger than my sci fi teenagers, their journeys are a little different.

In contrast to the teenagers who are hard and brash and want to be antagonistic just for the sake of it, the younger characters are more in awe of the magical worlds around them.  They see through simpler eyes, not childish eyes, but eyes that don’t angst yet.

But, who are they?

The Tweenagers, Fantasy

I’ve written two fantasy books so far. The working titles are, The Nexus from the Guardian Chronicles and Curious Events which is currently a stand alone novel, but we shall see. The children are involved are plucky, adventurous but they all have a way that they could change. (All images are not my own, they’re from Google. For illustrative purposes only.)

From The Nexus

Max
Max is a somewhat blunt instrument. He is brave and determined but he also doesn’t really think things through. Max is our protagonist from Book 1 of the Chronicles, and it takes him a little while to understand what has happened to him and where he is.

When Max is in trouble, he fights his way out of it. He looks for the advantage, finds it and gets away. He is strong and a kind person.

Max learns to be more than a boy from an ordinary life during his adventures in the Nexus. He learns he’s more than just a little kid. He finds out he’s a hero.

Lucy
Lucy thinks she knows most things, but it turns out that she knows nothing at all. She’s a have-a-go person, she is positive and brave. Lucy is the protagonist from Book 2 of the Chronicles and she loves the adventure she’s on. When she is fortunate enough to meet one of the characters from this new world, her adventure really starts and she is taken on a wild ride that challenges all she thought she knew.

Lucy talks her way out of trouble. She has a quick mind and she’s a good listener. She knows when she needs to act and when she needs to be quiet.

Lucy learns that she is important, she’s not just a person in the background anymore. She’s a hero.

Tom
Tom is more of an accidental hero. By trying to avoid being the hero he stumbles into situations where he proves himself bravely and smartly. But, he doesn’t run away from danger. He will avoid it if he can but he’s not scared. He goes places and does things that he never imagined doing but he pushes himself on and does his best, even knowing that he will probably fail.

Tom is book smart and gangly but he is brave and plucky. He learns that while he doesn’t quite believe in magic, that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. He learns to trust things that don’t make sense and to let himself go from time to time.

He also learns, he is a hero.

From Curious Events

Moira
Curious Events is seen mainly through Moira’s eyes. There are many unusual characters, some we know well and others are new, but they are all exciting to Moira.

She is smart and she is brave. Moira has a twinkle to her eye that hints of the mischeivious. She wants to be a good person but she can sometimes be distracted by the adventure. Moira has a strong voice and she will say, politely (sometimes) if she’s not happy with something or if someone is being incredibly silly. She isn’t one to mess about.

Moira’s adventure is one that opens her eyes. She goes from disbelief to certainty in the space of one novel and that certainty is what brings about the .. ah! No spoilers.

In Conclusion

I hope that has given you some insight into the characters of my characters. Moira is my favourite at the moment, but with editing that could change. By the time the novel comes to the public, she might not even be Moira anymore.

I hope you are able to read the adventures our plucky tweenagers go on.
