I would love to think that the characters in my books
So, who are they?
The Teenagers, Sci Fi
I’ve written two science fiction books so far. Working titles are, We Are Not Alone from the Inclusion Trilogy and Conexion from the Omni Series. I have a variety of different characters from those books. Let me tell you about them. (All images are not my own, they’re from Google. For illustrative purposes only.)
From Conexion
Toban
There’s an earthy simplicity to Toban. He has a talent for fixing things, but when faced with an incredibly grief he finds it difficult to fix himself. He’s resilient, focused but he’s incredibly vulnerable. He has a curiosity that almost gets him killed but he also respects authority, despite not always listening to it.
He’s a good person, a kind person. Raised by his mother as they bounced from ship to ship, he learnt how to fit in quickly and adapt.
Elizabeth Anne “Libby” Welleseley-Scott
Libby is … not like Toban. She was raised on Earth Prime, she’s almost royalty. Her life was privileged. It was sheltered. But, she was bored and she yearned for adventure. It was that need to do something, to be somewhere that got her into the trouble she’s gets into in Conexion. It’s that drive to do something exciting that ultimately… well, no spoilers.
I think, out of the two of them, it’s Libby that changes the most. She is someone who has a lot of potential. She’s also a good person, deep, deep, deep down.
Clara
Clara is my sub-plot in Conexion and her scenes
She’s a curious person. She eats up knowledge and always strives to understand everything. She treats the universe like it’s a mystery she has to solve. This can make Clara insensitive and a little ignorant. She finds it difficult to connect to people but when she does, it’s explosive.
I imagine her looking like Mayim Bialik.
From We Are Not Alone
Devan
Devan is the hero of our piece. He has lost everything: his family, his home, his friends. Everything has been taken away from him by The Enemy. He had to survive in a war zone alone and scared until he was rescued.
Devan is angry. He is full of hate and he wants revenge. Like all humans, he wants to wipe out The Enemy. But, things change for Devan. Along with all that anger, he is desperate to love again. He lost parents and a sister in the war, he is desperate to feel that connection, that love again. He’s open and ready for it so that when Elana comes along, things change for him.
Elana
Elana has had to endure some awful tortures in her short life. She is clever and a fast learner, she’s agile and strong and resilient. She’s also lost everything: her father was taken from her, her mother was probably killed. She hates humans almost as much as Toban hates her.
But she is lost and alone and searching for a connection. She wasn’t involved in the war, she didn’t hurt any humans but humans hurt her anyway. She’s angry, however when she meets Devan, she meets someone who understands her and calms her. She changes from the angry teenager she was into someone who is focused and determined to bridge the gaps in their experiences to create a unity.
Tidus
Tidus, like Toban, is a simple person. He’s an engineer, he’s the best engineer on the ship. He has simple wants: he wants everyone to be happy and get along. He wants to be working in the engineering bay where no one will disturb him. He knows what he wants out of life and he plods along with his goals.
He is also fiercely loyal and someone our main protagonists can rely on. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and will always do the right thing, whatever the consequences.
Emily
Emily has an open and a generous heart. She’s a minor character in We Are Not Alone but she is a key character. A lot of the plot wouldn’t move forward without her.
She is a listener. She’s not easily persuaded but she can see when she is wrong, and changes accordingly.
Luke
Luke is bitter and angry. He does a good job of hiding how he feels but he is a twisted knot of hate and fear. All the humans on the ship hate the aliens for the war but Luke has a little touch of evil to him and he wants revenge. If he can’t have revenge on the aliens who actually destroyed his home, then he will take it out on any who are close enough.
Naomi
Poor, fragile Naomi. Whatever happened to her in the War, she came out of it a survivor. She clings to the people who will keep her safe and cares not about the consequences of her actions.
