A Need to Focus

Three Novels at the Same Time

So I have started writing a third novel. It’s a middle gradeidas fantasy novel and I really love it. I’ve got some ideas that I really like to make it unique and different but also familiar.

I also have another middle grade fantasy that was inspired by my son playing, and also partly inspired by the above story.

But what about my scifi novel?

I’ve asked other writers what they do when they have other ideas pushing into their heads while writing. They told me ideas artto make notes but to focus on the WIP. Always focus on the WIP.

So, I started writing the other two middle grade fantasy novels.

This means that I haven’t written my sci fi WIP for at least a fortnight!

My job and my family commitments mean that I have a very limited time to write. I have made it 12,000 words into my sci fi WIP (using ywriter – love it!) so it’s going pretty well. I submitted the first chapter to a writing group they’re on and some established published authors said that they were ‘pleasantly surprised’.

Whenever I feel like it’s not going well, outer space that’s what I think about: proper authors thought my work was good.

However, I’ve got too many ideas on the go! I think it’s time to refocus back onto my young adult science fiction novel.

Libby and Toban are lost and alone. Libby, used to a life of luxury and privilledge has had to look after herself for the first time in her life. And Toban is alone for the first time in his life and has to fend for himself using his skills and knowledge. I think I need to move their journeys on so that they can grow into their new roles.

So, I am refocusing onto my young adult science fiction. And as I write, I need to consider if I will self publish or desperately try to submit to a kindly publisher who will publish my work.
