The Joy of Editing: How I Keep Losing Myself in My Own Novel

As a writer, there's nothing quite like the experience of diving into the world you've created and getting lost in it. And for me, that experience has been particularly intense during the editing process for my novel. I find myself completely absorbed in the story, to the point where I sometimes forget that I'm supposed to be editing!

 

But as much as I'm enjoying the experience, I also know that I need to be disciplined and get my work done. Editing is a crucial step in the publishing process, and it's important to make sure that my novel is the best it can be before I put it out into the world. So how do I balance the joy of reading my own work with the need to be productive and get the job done?

 

Here are a few tips that have helped me stay focused and get my novel ready for self-publishing:

 

Set achievable goals: It's easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work involved in editing a novel, but I find that breaking the process down into manageable chunks helps me stay focused. I set specific goals for each day or each session, so that I know exactly what I need to accomplish.

 

Get feedback from others: If you're lucky enough to have access to beta readers, make sure you listen to their advice but also check you have the right beta readers for you. Ensure that the advice suits your novel and the style you want to share. 

 

Take breaks: It's important to take breaks and step away from your work every now and then. I find that getting outside, taking a walk, or doing something completely different helps me recharge and come back to my editing with fresh eyes.

 

Use tools to stay organized: I use Microsoft Word to keep track of my revisions and make sure that I don't miss anything. I also keep a bullet journal and pages and pages of notes to help me remember where I've edited. I also use different coloured pens. I know that sounds daft, but the different colours help me see the editing clearly. 

 

To be honest, editing my novel has been an incredibly enjoyable experience, deep down. I love getting lost in the world I've created and discovering new things about my characters and story. But I also know that it's important to be disciplined and get my work done. By setting achievable goals, getting feedback from others, taking breaks, and using tools to stay organized, I've been able to make the most of this exciting process and get my novel ready for self-publishing. 

The Long and Winding Road: My Journey Through Editing My Middle Grade Science Fiction Novel

 As an author, there's nothing quite like the thrill of finishing a first draft of your novel. But for me, the real work was just beginning, as I embarked on the editing process for my middle grade science fiction novel. Little did I know, I was in for a long and winding road of trials and tribulations.

 

From the very start, I found that editing was a lot more challenging than I had anticipated. I was eager to get my book out into the world, but I soon realized that the process of refining and perfecting it was going to take a lot of time and effort. I was in for the long haul, and there were moments when I questioned whether I would ever reach the end.

 

One of the biggest obstacles I’m facing is the sheer volume of work involved in editing. My novel is over 60,000 words (although it may be shorter after editing), and it seems like there is always another round of revisions to be made. Every time I think I’m finished, I find another mistake or another section that needs improvement. It’s a never-ending cycle.

 

Another challenge I’m facing is the mental and emotional toll of editing. Reviewing my own work over and over again is a draining process, and I often feel like I’m losing sight of the bigger picture. I find myself losing confidence in my writing and questioning whether my book was even worth publishing.  The dreaded Imposter Syndrome, felt by writers and artists everywhere. These feelings of self-doubt and frustration are especially difficult to overcome.

 

But despite the challenges, I refuse to give up. I know editing is a crucial step in the publishing process, and I am determined to see it through.

Overcoming Fears and Doubts in Self-Publishing My Middle Grade Science Fiction Novel

As a writer, the idea of self-publishing my middle grade science fiction novel has always been both exciting and daunting. On the one hand, I'm thrilled to have complete creative control over my book and to bring it to life exactly as I envisioned it. On the other hand, there are so many fears and doubts that come along with self-publishing, particularly for a first-time author like myself.

 

One of the biggest concerns I have is whether I'm going to make any money from self-publishing my book. Will it be a financial success, or will I end up losing money? Is it worth the investment to print and distribute my book, or will it be a waste of resources? These are questions that run through my mind on a regular basis and can be discouraging, to say the least.

 

Another fear I have is whether my book is ever going to get out into the world. Will it be discovered by readers, or will it get lost in the vast sea of self-published books? Will anyone even care about my story and characters, or will it all have been for nothing? These are the thoughts that keep me up at night, and I know I'm not alone in feeling this way.

 

At times, I've also found myself struggling with imposter syndrome. Am I really a good enough writer to self-publish my book? Is my writing good enough to stand up against other middle grade science fiction novels? These thoughts can be incredibly damaging and can make me question my abilities as a writer.

 

Despite all of these fears and doubts, I'm learning to overcome them by focusing on the reasons why I decided to self-publish my book in the first place. I wrote this book because I was passionate about it and wanted to share my story with others. I wanted to bring my characters and world to life and share them with readers who will appreciate them. And most importantly, I wanted to follow my dream of becoming a published author. 

I may not know exactly what the future holds, but I'm taking this chance and putting my work out into the world. Whether it becomes a financial success or not, I know that I will have fulfilled my dream of becoming a published author and that is what truly matters.

Becoming a self-published author, the most challenging aspect is to get your book in front of a large audience. One tool that has become increasingly popular for marketing books is social media. As someone who has always been a little wary of social media, I have to admit, I was initially intimidated by the thought of using it to advertise my middle grade novel. But after some research and reflection, I've come to realise the power and potential of social media for reaching readers and building a community around my book.

 

When I first started thinking about using social media to promote my book, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of platforms and options available. Should I focus on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or all three? And what should I even post about? I found myself asking these questions and feeling uncertain about how to proceed.

 

However, as I dove deeper into the world of social media marketing, I began to see its potential. By building a presence on social media, I could connect with readers, engage with fans, and share my book with a wider audience. I could share sneak peeks of my book, post behind-the-scenes photos and videos, and share my thoughts and insights on the writing process.

 

I also started to see how social media could help me build a community around my book. I could engage with other writers and readers, join book clubs and discussion groups, and participate in online book events. By doing so, I could connect with people who share my passion for writing and storytelling and find new fans for my book.

 

While I still have some concerns about using social media, mainly involving self-promotion rather than connecting with others, I've come to see it as an essential tool for marketing my book. I'm learning to embrace it, to use it to reach new readers, and to build a community around my writing.

 

In conclusion, it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to marketing your book. But social media is an incredibly powerful tool for reaching a wider audience and building a community around your work. Where I'm At

 There are lots of things going on at the moment. I'll try to cover them all. 

1, Querying

If you're wondering why an author hoping to self-publish is querying it's because I have another novel that I'm trying to get out into the world at the same time. 

Tasha's Christmas Wish (working title) is a middle grade fantasy novel about a little girl with big ideas who almost destroys Christmas for everyone. 

2, Editing

How Lexi Walker Almost Saved the World is definitely not finished. Not by a long shot! I thought it was but when proof reading for self-publishing, I discovered a LOT of paragraphs, scenes and chapters I'd either completely change or delete entirely. I'm doing an entire rewrite, it looks like but How Lexi Walker Almost Saved the World will be a super polished novel ready for reading! 

3, Marketing

While all of this is going on, I've got to market my novel. I'm using social media mainly, trying to create an interest in my up and coming novel. Everyone has been so kind and supportive and I've learnt so much from everyone's amazing tips. I do feel very lucky, humble and grateful for all the support and advice so far. 

I'm also going to try giveaways and possibly find some one who might want to review my novel. My budget is next to nothing, unfortunately. 

That's where I'm at, at the moment. Not a lot to report really but I am working on it.

Giveaways: Consider giving away copies of your book as prizes in contests or giveaways. This can be a great way to get your book in front of a new audience and generate buzz.

Marketing, Unto the Breach

Did you know, Amazon releases 1.4 million self-published books every year but that number doesn't take into account the self-published books without an ISBN so the number of self-pubbed books is probably signifantly higher. There are litterally an ocean of novels out there so how do you make your novel stand out? 

One word: Marketing. 

It might be a dirty word to some authors but there it is, it's something we have to do. 

I am not entirely sure where to start or if I'm shouting into the void, but I'm not going to give up. I'm going to find out as much as I can and make it work. 

Step one: Build up a buzz

This means posting about my book, replying to posts and intereacting with people. It's a lot of work but it's worth it to get my baby out into the world. And, if I'm honest, I really enjoy it. It's great getting out there and talking about my writing and my characters. 

I'm doing a lot of research, talking to people, reading everything I can. Hopefully, it's all going to build up into a plan.  I'm devouring any advice I can get and mulling it over to discover how I can use that advice for my book. 

Tips for Staying Motivated

With a full-time job and two little kids at home, I often find myself too tired and overwhelmed to do anything after a long day. It's hard to stay motivated and find the time and energy to focus on my passion project.

But I'm not going to let that stop me from achieving my goal. I'm going to set aside some time each day to work on my project and make progress. I'm going to learn about the self-publishing process and figure out what I need to do to make it all work.

I'm going to reach out to other authors and ask for advice. I'm going to read up on the industry and figure out what I need to do to succeed. My goal is to eventually have a published book that I can be proud of.

I know it won't be easy, but I'm determined to make it happen. With a lot of hard work and dedication, I'm confident that I can do this. I'm ready to take on this challenge and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me.

I collected some tips on staying focused and motivated while working and mum-ing and thought I might share them with you:

This will help you stay on track and focused. 5.Take breaks: Make sure to take breaks in between tasks to keep yourself refreshed and focused. 6.Enlist help: Ask for help from family and friends if needed. This will help you stay on track and focused. 7.Stay positive: Remind yourself why you’re doing this and stay positive. This will help you stay motivated and focused.

Feeling Nervous

Working full time and being a mum, I'm well aware of the challenges of balancing a job, family, and trying to find time to pursue my dreams. But despite the challenges, I have decided to take the plunge and embark on the journey of self-publishing.

The thought of self-publishing can be daunting, especially as I have a budget of £0. But I am determined to make this project a success and am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that come with it.

I am excited to have the chance to share my stories and ideas with the world and to have complete control over the publishing process. It's quite daunting. I wish I knew more about publishing before I tried to do it all myself but I'm looking forward to it.

I will be taking this journey step by step and am fully aware that it may be difficult to find the time to work on my project. But I am confident that I can make it work, by finding creative solutions and scheduling my time efficiently.

This project is something I have wanted to do for a long time, and I am thrilled to finally be taking the first steps towards making it a reality. I am looking forward to the journey ahead and I am excited to start exploring the world of self-publishing.

Offer giveaways and promotions: Running giveaways or promotions is a great way to get your book noticed and attract new readers. Consider offering free copies of your book or discounts on your website or through social media.

Dipping my Toe into Self-Publishing

As a working mother of two, I know the challenges of balancing a busy lifestyle while pursuing my passions. That's why I've decided to take the leap and self-publish my own book, despite having a minimal budget.
